A man has been charged with attempted murder after an 11-year-old girl stabbed in central London’s busy Leicester Square on Monday, police said Tuesday. Ioan Pintaru, 32, is due to appear in court in London on Tuesday, the capital’s Metropolitan Police said.
Two weeks after the murder of three young girls with knives in Southport (north-west) which sparked anti-migrant and Islamophobic riots, the police were called on Monday morning about an attack in this area frequented by many tourists.
The girl was seriously injured, but her life is not in danger, police said. Her mother, 34, was initially reported to have been injured, but it turned out to be the child’s blood. Police said they were not focusing on the terrorist theory and said the suspect and the victim did not appear to know each other.
