Belgium: mammoth bones discovered on a construction site in Brussels – (France 2)
The discovery is extremely rare and incredible. Mammoth bones have been discovered in Brussels, Belgium, at the city’s metro construction site, suggesting the animal wandered through the area.
It is on the construction site of a future metro line very close to the Midi station, in Brussels (Belgium), that these traces of the past were found by digging eight to nine meters deep. The workers reached the sedimentary layers dating from the last ice age. Mammoths in the middle of an urban environment: the discovery may surprise, but there is an explanation, according to specialists.
Other discoveries to come?
“We often have the representation of a distant animal because it is extinct, when not at all. (…) For a very long time, there were more mammoths on the European continent than there were ‘humans’, explains Régis Debruyn, paleontologist at the National Museum of Natural History. The bones are currently being analyzed in the laboratory in Brussels. Such a discovery brings hope according to the archaeologists, who will continue the excavations in the city center.
