Maltese conservative Roberta Metsola re-elected as president of the European Parliament

Maltese conservative Roberta Metsola has been re-elected as president of the European Parliament. MEPs, elected on 9 June, returned to the European Parliament on Tuesday 16 July. It was on this occasion that they re-elected their president, Maltese conservative Roberta Metsola, with 562 votes out of 699 voters (76 blank votes).

“There is no better place here in Strasbourg (…) to remember the past and build the future”reacted Roberta Metsola, in French in front of the parliamentarians.

After the suspicions of corruption in the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola promised in January 2023 to clean house to rebuild trust with citizens. She proposed a series of reforms: banning former MEPs from accessing the institution, establishing a transparency register on gifts and meetings in third countries.
