Make way for readers | What you want to add in 2023

Earlier this month, we sent out a call to our readers to find out what they wanted to add in 2023. Here’s a look at some of the emails we received.

Help for the cultural community

Protection and security of the cultural environment for all disciplines: theatre, literature, performing arts, music, etc. Our creators live in poverty. They are exhausted. What would we be without culture. Also, facilitate access by maintaining affordable prices. That the government establish, at the level of taxes, a withholding mechanism in order to constitute a support fund, returned and distributed, among these people who bring us comfort, dreams, food for the soul. Our mental health is at stake.

Of slowness and contemplation

I would add what we are sorely lacking and which would have consequences for all forms of life on earth: rediscovering our capacity for wonder in the face of our natural world through attentive gaze, through a little more slowness and sensitivity. Another way of living, therefore, which would balance our human reality and the planetary reality.

Marc Boucher, Laval

family time

I would like to add family time. Time passes so quickly, I want to enjoy my children’s early childhood. To hang out in bed with them in the morning, to say “hurry up” less often, to eat pancakes on Sunday morning. Take the time to take the time.

Josiane Trotier

Add some realism

Life is about making choices, individually and collectively. To choose is also to renounce. This realism that we must add, it is not incumbent on a government. It must be that of a major project that will lead us collectively to define what we want, what we are giving up and to what extent. It’s easy to always want the best… It’s hard to determine what is right.

Max Caron

Kindness, tolerance and respect

In 2023, I want to add propriety among individuals, tolerance and respect for difference, whatever the form. I hope to add humanity to a society that has become virtual. I want civility on roads and public places. In short, what I want to add is it still possible? Only if everyone has the same desire and acts accordingly.

More investigative journalists

In 1970, Alvin Toffler in his worldwide bestseller The shock of the future feared the exaggerated power of the media. Every morning reading The Press in 2022, I who am today in the terrible future of Toffler, I am more impressed than frightened by the work of the media. Would the good people have access to the truth without the research work of your journalists. Would we be showered with texts written by public relations firms in formatted and superficial press conferences? The answer is obvious to me. So please journalists continue to ask questions and investigate the work of our institutions and leaders. It is vital for the health of a society that oscillates between populism and obscurantism. Adding smart, bright journalists will only balance society and minimize “future shock”.

Michel Proulx, Saint-Anicet

Help for seniors

I would add security measures for our seniors so that they stay as long as possible in their homes.

Michael Duval

Improve the public transport offer

We need to add bike paths and new routes in the public transit network. I am therefore not talking about the REM, which takes over already efficient routes (Deux-Montagnes-downtown line) and privatizes them. We must use and incorporate the Bixi concept into the public transit offer. It is also necessary to tax the use of the car more and to set up the kilometric tax and the return of the toll on the bridges of Montreal.
