A major fire was underway Friday evening in a vacant building in Old Montreal, at the corner of Notre-Dame Ouest and Saint-Henri streets. Around 150 firefighters are battling the flames.
The Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM) was alerted around 8 p.m. Quickly, the intensity of the blaze led to a series of alerts. Around 9:30 p.m., nearly 150 firefighters were still fighting the flames, said Sylvain Jalbert, section head for the SIM.
The building, located at the corner of Notre-Dame Ouest and Saint-Henri streets, is vacant. On site, firefighters also did not identify any people inside. Firefighters are therefore working to control the blaze from the outside and ensure the protection of adjacent buildings, explained Mr. Jalbert.
No firefighters or civilians were injured.
Several reasons can explain the intensity of the flames. If a criminal act is identified, the investigation will be transmitted to the City of Montreal Police Department, specifies Mr. Jalbert.
