Major fire in a bitumen tank in Montreal East

A fire broke out in a Bitumar company bitumen tank at the corner of Broadway and Sherbrooke Streets East, in Montreal East.

The fire started in the building located in the refinery sector around 5:25 a.m.

Twenty vehicles and about 80 firefighters were deployed to the scene, said the section chief of the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM), Patrick Fournel.

By 8:45 a.m., the fire was brought under control. “There is no danger for the population and no one has been relocated or injured,” added Mr. Fournel.

Sherbrooke Street is closed eastbound from the street starting at Marien Avenue. The area is to be avoided. Police are on site to direct traffic.

In 2012, a fire also started in a bitumen tank at Bitumar. Fifty firefighters were dispatched to the scene. There had been no injuries.
