Maintaining the state of emergency

Opinions are divided as to whether or not the state of emergency is maintained by the CAQ government. Here is an overview of the emails received in response to Michel C. Auger’s column published on November 14 in the Context section.

Read “A democratic state of emergency”

The inflated ego

There is clearly an abuse of power, confirmed by the polls and the media, which inflates the ego of the CAQ government. The checks and balances do not play their roles, which leads to democratic dysfunction.

Sarto Lelièvre

During the time of the Roman dictators …

The Romans before the Empire had conceived the role of the dictator, mandated by the imperium for a period which was not to exceed six months. Why this prescribed duration? Precisely to prevent these full powers from becoming the norm and for fear that this temporary regime does not take hold. Because power, in the long term, has no other goal than to endure. Noticeably, the political world has not changed much since Sylla and Caesar.

Christophe Landarc

Still justifiable

This is the state of health emergency, not martial law. As long as the children are not vaccinated, I believe that the state of health emergency can be justified. Look at the resurgence of cases in Europe, with the permeability of our borders, and you will see that the health emergency is still a matter of caution today.

Jacques Bordeleau

An exercise that prolongs the debates

I disagree with your approach; How to explain that the two provinces which stopped the health emergency decrees during the summer were the hardest hit by the fourth wave? To ask the question is to provide a possible solution. The exercise of democracy unfortunately tends to prolong debates so that the other parties can assert themselves. Obviously, this right must be used well, and if you have any examples to support your point, I would be happy to hear them.

André Lachance

Nonsense

Entirely in agreement, it does not make sense to govern again in this way and to make us believe that we are in a democracy. Already, the government has a majority, so why govern in state of emergency? We are losing confidence in this government.

Luc Langlois

Mr. Legault took a liking to it

It has been a long time since Mr. Legault got used to leading in an authoritarian manner and he has taken the liking to it more and more.

Dove Vignola

Certain situations require it

I admit that as long as a dictatorial tendency seems well-informed, well-informed and sane, I tend to be in favor, especially if the decision-making is about vital situations like health and safety. However, I am not against democracy.

Hugues Beauregard

What do the people think?

I’m a little fed up that we always talk about “dictatorship” when a government or a regime is elected (democratically), we should ask the people for their opinion on the measures of the state of emergency. I think we would have a surprise. When a government governs adequately, we support it without question.

Roger side

Need details

I share your reading of the situation. However, we cannot say that the government has not abused its powers when there has been no audit and we do not know the details of these mutual agreements.

Alain Brochu, Quebec

Hijack the debate

The question is relevant, but we must ask ourselves if certain political actors do not divert the real debate by useless interventions.

Yvon Croteau

The CAQ governs as if it possessed the truth

Completely agree with M. Auger. I am a supporter of the CAQ, but I have not liked the government’s attitude for several months. In my opinion, his success and his popularity in the face of the weakness of the other parties went to his head … Whether it was his too narrow vision on the environment and the too weak measures put in place to counter global warming, his stubbornness to defending and promoting with blinders the third link project in Quebec, its reductive and disrespectful response to the highly relevant and thoughtful letter from Mr. Labeaume, his bravado towards general practitioners, then towards the nurses unions … in short, the CAQ governs as if it possessed the truth and the solution to all evils. However, we know very well that this is not the case, and by abandoning certain democratic rules as it does with this prolonged health emergency without any real justification, it shows that listening is not one of its values. Definitely, if the CAQ does not change its tone or attitude, I will have to look for another political party …
