A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7 hit the country. “In the Hualien region, there have already been reports of houses toppling over and numerous vehicles being hit by falling rocks”says Chen Chien-jen, Taiwanese Prime Minister.
Tsunami alerts quickly lifted
According to firefighters, victims are still trapped in the collapse of several buildings in the city of Hualien, the epicenter of the earthquake. The shallow earthquake was followed by several aftershocks. In Taichung (Taiwan), the tremors caused landslides. The first deaths were noted on the east coast of the island. Tsunami warnings were issued in Taiwan, but also in western Japan and the Philippines. They were lifted a few hours later by the authorities.
