Magnitude 6 earthquake hits southern Philippines

A magnitude 6 earthquake hit the southern Philippines on Tuesday, the USGS Seismological Institute said, with local authorities warning of possible property damage and aftershocks.

The shallow earthquake occurred around 2 p.m. local time (6 a.m. GMT), a few kilometers from the municipality of Maragusan in the mountainous province of Davao de Oro, on the island of Mindanao, in the south of the ‘archipelago.

An employee of the Maragusan disaster office told AFP that reports of a landslide on a national road were being verified.

“We have not received any information on other damage or victims, but we are checking the villages” around, he added, requesting anonymity.

“Objects shook in the office, but there was no damage,” said this employee.

Earthquakes occur daily in the Philippines, which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area of ​​intense seismic and volcanic activity.
