A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean off Panama on Tuesday evening, according to the USGS Institute of Geophysics, with Panamanian Civil Protection reporting no immediate casualties or damage.
The quake, which took place about 80 km off the coast of Panama at a shallow depth of 13 km, according to the USGS, was felt in much of the country, including in the capital located about 350 km from the ‘epicenter.
According to the Panamanian Civil Protection (Sinaproc), which for its part reported a magnitude of 6.7, the earthquake occurred at 5:18 p.m. local time (22:18 GMT).
The earthquake did not generate a tsunami, said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Honolulu in the US state of Hawaii.
“No damage has been reported following the recent earthquake,” Sinaproc said on Twitter, adding that “the National Emergency Operations Center is continuing its observations and monitoring.”
