Magnitude 6.3 earthquake near the coast of Taiwan

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan on Monday, the United States Seismological Institute (USGS) said, with the country’s meteorological institute estimating the magnitude at 6.1.

The earthquake shook buildings in the capital Taipei. According to local television, it was felt across the island, but no immediate damage was seen.

The USGS said the quake struck at a depth of 27 kilometers, about 70 kilometers southwest of Yonaguni, a Japanese island off Taiwan.

Taiwan and its surroundings are regularly hit by earthquakes due to their location near the junction between two tectonic plates.

In March, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook the eastern coast of Taiwan, injuring one person and causing the collapse of a half-built bridge in the east of the island.
