Magnitude 2.4 earthquake near North Korean nuclear test site

A magnitude 2.4 earthquake struck Thursday near a North Korean nuclear test site, Yonhap news agency reported, citing South Korean weather services.

The earthquake, which appeared to have occurred naturally, occurred 41 km northwest of Kilju, the county capital where there is a nuclear test site, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

The earthquake occurred at 7 p.m. (5 a.m. in Quebec) at a depth of 20 km underground.

North Korea carried out six nuclear tests from the site in this region between 2006 and 2017.

The test in 2017 caused an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3, felt as far away as China.
