Now that the Common Front has completed its negotiations with the government for public sector employees, the president of the Quebec Federation of Workers (FTQ) is turning her sights to Ottawa, where there will be a general election by fall 2025.
In addition to describing the Conservative campaign as “worrying,” Magali Picard mentioned: “I have been following Pierre Poilievre’s career for a long time. He has a new image as a “good guy”, but his philosophy and values are very far from those of the FTQ.”
Mme Picard even published a video on FTQ social media titled “The dangers of the Canadian right,” where she says that the Conservative leader is there “for the 1% of rich people in the country.” Also, she says that there are people like the Conservative leader south of the border and that there are states that have “abandoned workers”.
She even talks about the disappearance of the middle class.
Nothing new
In 2015, the FTQ also led a campaign against the Conservatives. More concretely, the FTQ wanted to block the path of Stephen Harper’s party in eight ridings in Quebec and nearly sixty across the country.
The Conservatives lost power, but they had their best result in Quebec, winning 12 seats. In conclusion, the campaign of the largest union center in Quebec did not work too well.
With the releases of Magali Picard, we can wonder if the FTQ will want to repeat the same stratagem as in 2015.
To present oneself
With 41% of support in the latest survey from the firm Abacus Data, there are undoubtedly FTQ union members who intend to vote for the Conservatives.
It’s always a little unhealthy to see union leaders get so actively involved in electoral campaigns. The unions have become so powerful that they think they can do anything.
So, if Magali Picard and her colleagues want to play politics, they can put their “face” on the post, because there are undoubtedly parties looking for candidates.
