(Madrid) Quebecer Leylah Fernandez lost in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo on Saturday in the semi-finals of the Madrid Tennis Open, a W100 category tournament of the ITF.
Fernandez only hit 55% of his first serves, committed seven double faults without hitting a single ace and won just 50% of the points after placing his first ball in play.
Fernando, 50e in the world, also faced 14 break points and lost six. The Quebecer had three service breaks in seven opportunities against the 155-ranked playere rank in the WTA.
One of those breaks gave him a 2-0 lead in the first set. Fernandez, however, lost the next six games and then the first two of the second set.
Fernandez came back on even serve until she was broken again on the 11e game of the second set that the Quebecer could not erase.
