Madagascar: the increase in the price of the bus ticket, limited

The transporters, who officiate on the Antananarivo bus lines, are obliged to maintain the price of the ticket at 600 Ar and not 800 Ar as they wish. In the event of non-compliance with this tariff, the authorities will take sanctions. The cars will be impounded.

The price of the bus ticket on the Tananarive lines has been set at 600 Ar, by the government. A price negotiated with representatives of the Union of Urban Transport Cooperatives (UCTU), which does not satisfy all the Federations. At the end of last week the Groupement Fitaterana Mirindra ho an’Antananarivo (FMA), will set the ticket at 800 Ar. In the process, other cooperatives in the capital declared themselves ready to follow the movement. The directions estimate the increase of 100 Ar, insufficient, taking into account the price of the liter of diesel (4,900 Ar or 1.14 €), writes Madagascar-Tribune.

The response from the government and the municipality fell on Monday. All companies that do not follow the directives set by the state expose themselves to sanctions. It is out of the question to engage in new discussions. Compensations were negotiated (taxes, taxes, spreading of debts and modernization of fleets with more economical buses).

The representatives of the Ministry of Transport and the town hall of Antananarivo held a joint press conference to display a common speech. It is out of the question to discuss. In the joint statement, they write: “A decision was taken by the President of the Republic fixing the price of public transport at 600 ariary for the city of Antananarivo and its surroundings. There is no more matter for discussion”.

Facing the press, the director of transport and urban mobility in Tana clarified that the companies which have increased the price of the ticket to 800 Ar have a deadline: “They have until Thursday to restore the situation.”

Beyond July 21, 2022, carriers are exposed to sanctions. The buses will be impounded and, if nothing changes, the companies will be deprived of their licence. The police commissioner was present during this point, note 24724.mg.
