Should the European flag be made compulsory alongside the French flag on town halls? A symbolic proposal of course, but which illustrates the strategy of the majority which wants to make Europe a key issue in the months to come. Firstly because on this subject: she has clear ideas. We sometimes wonder about the nature of the Macronist project, we make fun of its oscillations, its “at the same time” side.

>> European flag on town halls: for the MoDem group, it is “really not an emergency”

European commitment is a constant of the Head of State. Conversely, it is a reason for permanent discord on the left. 18 years after the 2005 referendum, it continues to tear itself apart between the camp of the “ouistes” and that of the “nonistes”. We saw it again on Monday May 8 when the rebellious MEP Manon Aubry asserted on franceinfo that the European flag referred to a “democratic forfeiture”an allusion to the Treaty of Lisbon.

This European trap could turn against the majority

A statement that also angers environmentalists: MEP Yannick Jadot described, on the contrary, the European flag as “magnificent symbol of freedom, democracy and the rule of law“. For the Greens, the exit of Manon Aubry is a godsend. It shows that it is impossible for the Nupes to present a single list to the Europeans next June. Europe is therefore a trap set for the left, who fell in with both feet. But also on the far right: the elected RNs do not hide that they do not like the European flag. On the other hand, since the start of the war in Ukraine, Marine Le Pen has been trying to to hide, more or more, its pro-Russian leanings. There she is, therefore, stuck by the other proposal submitted to the Assembly: a cross-partisan resolution aimed at qualifying the Wagner militia as a “terrorist group”.Marine Le Pen indicated that she would approve of it.

But this European trap could turn against the majority. First, because even if it has been effective in the face of Covid and Putin, Europe is often perceived as powerless in the face of the migratory challenge or inflation. Above all, it is a theme far from the daily concerns of the French. To the point that some Modem and Horizons deputies are railing against the initiative of their Renaissance counterparts on the European flag. And they could well make it fail at the time of the vote.
