Macron and Starmer Discuss Potential One-Month Ceasefire in Ukraine

France and Great Britain are leading a new initiative, the ‘Coalition of the Willing,’ to develop a ceasefire plan for Ukraine, while Ukrainian President Zelensky remains hopeful for ongoing US support. During a London meeting, discussions centered on a European peace strategy, with Macron proposing a one-month ceasefire. Zelensky emphasized the need for security guarantees and praised US contributions. Germany’s role in the coalition is uncertain, with calls for enhanced support and closer transatlantic ties.

Coalition Efforts for a Ceasefire in Ukraine

France and Great Britain are spearheading a new initiative known as the ‘Coalition of the Willing,’ aiming to establish a ceasefire plan for Ukraine. Amid these diplomatic efforts, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remains optimistic about continued support from the United States.

During a recent meeting in London, this coalition, led by the UK and France, emerged with the goal of crafting a European strategy for peace in Ukraine. Discussions are actively ongoing, though no consensus has been reached regarding the specifics of a ceasefire. Luke Pollard, the UK’s Secretary of State for the Armed Forces, shared insights with the BBC about the coalition’s objectives, stating, “We are collaborating with France and our European allies to explore ways to achieve a lasting and sustainable peace in Ukraine.” He added that various options are currently under consideration.

Ongoing Peace Negotiations and Zelensky’s Vision

Despite the absence of a formal agreement, French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed a one-month ceasefire that would encompass air, sea, and energy infrastructure. This proposal was highlighted during discussions at the Ukraine summit in London, where Macron, alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasized the necessity of initiating a ceasefire.

Following the summit, Zelensky expressed his desire for peace and reiterated the importance of security guarantees as a cornerstone for achieving this goal. He acknowledged the vital role of the US in supporting Ukraine and expressed gratitude for the assistance received. “We appreciate America’s contributions; there hasn’t been a day without our gratitude,” he stated in a video message.

As discussions continue, the future of Germany’s involvement in Ukraine policy remains uncertain. Outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for an end to bombings to facilitate a ceasefire, while Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has advocated for Germany to join the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ and emphasized the need for financial support to Ukraine.

SPD co-chairman Lars Klingbeil highlighted the importance of maintaining close ties with the US, stating, “We must be deeply rooted in the transatlantic relationship and consistently communicate our desire to work alongside the Americans.” He also stressed the urgency for Europe to advance in security and defense policies.
