Everyone expected to see the young Canadian player Macklin Celebrini be suspended following his action on Friday against Switzerland, but he ultimately escaped without any sanction.
The disciplinary committee of the International Ice Hockey Federation (FIHG) indicated on Saturday morning that although he had been expelled from the match, it did not see the need to impose an additional sanction.
Losing control in the second period, Celebrini went behind Leo Braillard, who was facing the bay window. The Canadian attacker tackled him hard and the Swiss’ head hit the boards as he fell.
“I know the kid and he didn’t mean to cause any harm. It’s that kind of game where you have to think in a second. He must learn to wrap his arms around her instead. I hope the young man is correct. We will wait and see,” head coach Alan Letang told the TSN network after the match.
