MAC collecting operations

It seems important to me today to take a few minutes to correct certain erroneous information circulating concerning the collecting operations of the Musée d’art contemporain (MAC). Contrary to what was published on May 25 in an opinion letter, there is currently no moratorium on loans of works from the collection to the MAC.

All loan requests for works received are carefully analyzed by the Collection team, taking into consideration the possibility of access to the works and the parameters of our Collections Management Policy. I would also like to point out that despite the reduction in our museum space and the operational challenges we are facing in this period of transformation, more than ten loans have been made in 2022-2023 and/or are planned for 2023. -2024. Added to this number are more than fifty works on active long-term loans.

In addition, to ensure the accessibility of the institutional collection during this delicate transition, over the past year we have put online the MACrépertoire, a unique digital platform designed to facilitate the discovery of the MAC’s collections, which is a diversified source of information on the Museum’s collection, artists, events and publications produced since its founding in 1964. This evolving research tool makes available to the general public the rich collection of works and resources related to the MAC’s collections and cultural programming. We therefore invite all contemporary art lovers to turn to this resource, which offers an intuitive and user-friendly experience to explore the institutional collection in depth.

At the same time, the collections team is mobilized, together with the museum sector, towards the development of short- and long-term, sustainable and realistic solutions to support our collecting activities.

The MAC is still just as committed to its role as a catalyst for ideas, a space for dialogue and a showcase for new trends in contemporary art from its quarters at Place Ville Marie, and is developing a series of pop ups, a program across the metropolis, which will enrich the existing offer as of next fall. Stay tuned!
