Lydia Kepinski | Beautiful chronicle of time spent ★★★½

Four years have passed since the very good album June first, who officially introduced us to Lydia Képinski. Now the singer-songwriter tells us what has happened “since”. The chronicle of his moods is more rhythmic, still just as intense, with an unrestrained bite.

The title track, at the opening of the album, sets the tone: we still distinctly hear this unique pop that Képinski offered us in his early days, but we are also warned that this musical odyssey will be quite different.

Disco rhythm The deception, common, but no less interesting, story of this feeling of not deserving what we have. We dance and we lament at the same time, a cocktail that is always satisfying when it is well dosed. The disco also tints this disc (and its cover) in a judicious way, most often with subtlety, and especially without an impression of pastiche spoiling everything.

Already after a few songs, we are again bewitched by the voice of Lydia Képinski, a singular oscillation between a sung and spoken tone, always pleasant, even when it does not do what is expected of it. On Sincethe musician surprises in the use of her main instrument (on the very beautiful Oyster season, for example), as it does in terms of instrumentation. This quality, which could be compared to the brilliant Klô Pelgag, is one of the great assets of the work proposed by Képinski.

The Montrealer asserts herself in the brilliant and playful MTL hates me, released a few months ago as a first single. Then she tells in the gloomy but hasty Two days the story that seems so true of a volatile love (the vocal extracts at the beginning at the end reinforce this realism).

Anthony, magnificent, brings the tempo back to a slow lament. We are in a roller coaster, sometimes carried away by crazy and dancing rhythms, sometimes lulled by sweet melodies. Képinski’s pen also follows this ever-changing curve. Sometimes very literary, with historical references, other times it becomes full of puns and fun. Whether it’s a question of desire, loneliness, fallen love or the reality of being an artist, Lydia Képinski is more convincing than ever.
