Ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is still well ahead of his competitor, outgoing head of state Jair Bolsonaro, in the voting intentions for the presidential election on October 2 in Brazil, according to a poll published Thursday, September 15. Lula is credited with 45% of voting intentions and Mr. Bolsonaro with 33%, an array of “total stability” compared to last week’s opinion poll (45% against 34%), said the director of the Datafolha institute, Luciana Chong, in unveiling the results of this Thursday, with a margin of error of 2 %.

54% of the votes in the second round

The other candidates share the crumbs for this ballot which presents itself as the most polarized for decades in Brazil: Ciro Gomes (center-left) comes in third position with 8th, ahead of the centrist Simone Tebet (5%). Support for the far-right president has increased in recent months, as Jair Bolsonaro was 21 points behind in May compared to the candidate of the Workers’ Party (PT, left).

To be elected in the first round, a candidate must obtain more than 50% of the votes cast (ie without blank or invalid votes). According to this criterion, Lula currently obtains 48% of the votes cast. In a possible second round, the former president (2003-2010) would beat Jair Bolsonaro with 54% of the vote against 38%. For its latest survey, Datafolha interviewed 5,926 people between September 13 and 15 in 300 cities in Brazil.
