The new Brazilian president will be known at the end of October. The left-wing ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, better known as “Lula”, finished first in the first round of the presidential election ahead of outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday, October 2. He is ahead of the far-right leader by five points: Lula obtained 48.4% of the vote, against 43.2% for Bolsonaro, according to almost final but still partial results published by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

Neither of the two candidates obtained an absolute majority, and the two men will be decided in a second round, Sunday October 30. About six million votes separate Lula, who counts more than 57 million votes, and Jair Bolsonaro.
More than 156 million Brazilians were called to vote for this first round in order to choose their president for the next four years. Centrist Simone Tebet ranks third with 4.16% of the vote, while Labor Ciro Gomes follows her at 3.05%.
