The German airline has cut more than 3,000 summer flights since the start of the month, mostly departing from and arriving in Frankfurt and Munich.

The airline industry is coming back down to earth. The German company Lufthansa announced on Thursday June 23 that it would cut 2,200 flights this summer due to the lack of personnel in the airline sector, strikes and Covid-19.
The flights affected mainly concern Frankfurt and Munich airports, for domestic and intra-European connections, every day of the week. This is the second wave of cancellations at the airline giant: it had already announced the elimination of 900 connections planned for the summer period on Fridays and weekends, June 9. Same thing at its low-cost subsidiary Eurowings, which canceled “several hundred flights” for July.
The airline justifies these measures in a statement by “a shortage of personnel from which the entire European aviation sector suffers”. To these shortages, which concern in particular “airports, ground services, aviation security”are added “strikes among air traffic controllers, the weather and above all an increase in Covid-19 infections”.
Since the lifting of health restrictions across the world, airlines are facing significant labor shortages in the face of rising demand. British airports in particular have been severely disrupted for weeks, with long queues and series cancellations from Easyjet, British Airways, Tui or Wizz Air.
