Notice to those interested: a new little haunt for lovers of Caribbean flavors has recently opened, and it offers unique coconut bread sandwiches in town. If, like us, coconut bread doesn’t mean anything to you (yet), brace yourself: these little round and lightly sweetened, homemade pancakes (and daily, on top of that!), are worth the detour on their own.

“It’s like biting into a cloud! laughs the chef-owner, Jeba Bowers Murphy, who opened this address on avenue du Parc in October (instead of the former Cuisine Caraïbe Delight). Hailing from Toronto, the jack-of-all-trades (she studied literature and archeology at Concordia, was a wedding planner, caterer, and trained as a doula!), born to a mother from the island of Dominica and a Jamaican father, dared and tried everything for everything, in the midst of a pandemic: “I can do that! she says. I have always loved to cook! »
On the menu of this (very) unpretentious little kitchen, but overflowing with freshness: only a few dishes, and only sandwiches (for the moment…): jerk chicken (tasty, garnished with a crunchy coleslaw), fried fish (with cilantro, with a subtle taste of coming back to it), BBQ pork (out of stock during our visit) and, of course, as a veggie option (and surprising in flavor), jerk squash. As an accompaniment, three small salads (cucumber, mango or tamarind from the garden) with tangy and salty flavors.
Ideal for a sunny afternoon, to dream of summer without breaking the bank. Be careful, however, not to be in too much of a hurry: the chef is alone in the kitchens. If the freshness is certainly at the rendezvous, it takes a minimum of 15 minutes to prepare each sandwich. Plan ahead.
Open Thursday to Monday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. (6 p.m. Sunday).
