For the Republicans, the government chose the date of the vote on the end-of-life bill, May 27, based on the European elections.

The 71 members of the special commission who examine the bill on end of life and support for the sick are meeting for the first time on Monday April 22. Before going through the 21 articles of the text, they will first hear the opinions of doctors, philosophers, sociologists and even representatives of religions. The project must then arrive in the hemicycle on May 27.
But this choice of date concerns certain elected Republicans, who denounce manipulation. The hearings take place in the middle of a parliamentary recess, then the vote is scheduled three days before the European legislative elections. For MP and doctor Philippe Juvin, this proves that the government needs a springboard. “We asked for the vote to take place two or three days after the European elections, but this was refused on false and futile grounds.”
“They want a victory in Parliament before the European elections.”

The other trap set for the right is to accentuate the opposition between progressives and conservatives. An absolute contradiction for Annie Genevard, number 2 of the Republicans, who considers that“there are not the moderns who would like to administer death, and the ancients who would like to prevent it. It is a very reductive shortcut.”
Vote “in your soul and conscience”
The challenge for Les Républicains is also to avoid divisions, including the party “don’t need it at the moment”, whispers an elected official. For his part, the deputy for Bas-Rhin, Patrick Hetzel has made his calculations. Three-quarters of his colleagues should, like him, vote against this text. But there is no question of pointing the finger at others. “It seems essential to me to vote freely in one’s soul and conscience, but on questions like these, it obviously makes even more sense.”
The National Rally also denounces manipulation by the government. But for the RN, well ahead in the polls for the European legislative elections, the stakes are less important.
