For his 9and feature film as director, Nicole Garcia has chosen to explore the mysteries of film noir by infiltrating a classic love triangle story. The accomplished actress, who has never given herself the slightest role in one of her films, displays great mastery there, especially since she is also interested, a little as she had done in the time of Place Vendômeto a world where money also plays a crucial role.

Divided into three very distinct parts, the screenplay, co-written with faithful accomplice Jacques Fieschi (the co-screenwriter oflost illusions co-signed all of Nicole Garcia’s feature films), places a torn female character at its center. Between the memory of a passionate – and exciting – love with Simon (Pierre Niney), involved in a drug deal gone wrong, and the more stable but less exciting life she now leads with Léo (Benoît Magimel) , the businessman she married, the heart of Lisa (Stacy Martin) swings.

lovers would no doubt have benefited from a more feverish gaze. The filmmaker preferred to keep her distance by offering an elegant thriller, but a little cold, in which she relies more on a closer observation of the relationships between individuals from different classes.

Stacy Martin, British actress revealed in the Nymphomaniac by Lars von Trier, forms an engaging film couple with Pierre Niney, and Benoît Magimel, recent winner of the César for best actor thanks to his performance in In his lifetime (Emmanuelle Bercot), excels once again by slipping into the skin of a character preserving its mysteries.

Launched at the Venice Film Festival in 2020, where it was in the running for the Golden Lion, lovers is now on the big screen in Quebec.
