In July 2024, Michaël Youn announced the start of production for *Fatal 2*, a sequel to his 2010 comedy that gained a cult following. The new film will explore the character of Fatal Bazooka, a hardcore rapper, and his evolution in today’s society, addressing themes of humor and cultural change. Scheduled for filming in 2025 and aiming for a 2026 release, Youn is excited to revisit this beloved character while reflecting on his past in a modern context.
In July 2024, Michaël Youn revealed that production has officially started on Fatal 2, the long-awaited sequel to the comedy that debuted in 2010. The original musical film, which captivated over 1.5 million viewers upon its release, swiftly became a fan favorite.
This marks Youn’s directorial debut, featuring the character Fatal Bazooka, a flashy and hard-hitting rapper. With millions of fans and a staggering four Music Awards for Best Artist of the Year, Fatal is portrayed as the epitome of success. However, behind the glitzy facade, he grapples with his identity, having convinced the world he hails from the streets, when in reality, he was born in a quaint village in the Savoie region of the Alps. The narrative takes a turn with the arrival of singer Chris Prolls, leading to transformative events. The film draws inspiration from the group of the same name, which Youn co-created with Vincent Desagnat and Benjamin Morgaine in 2002 on the M6 show Morning Live.
After years of development, Fatal 2 is finally coming to fruition. To coincide with the release of Nicolas Vanier’s comedy C’est le monde à l’envers!, we caught up with Michaël Youn to discuss what fans can expect from the sequel, the story it will tell, and his excitement about stepping back into the role of the rapper.
What’s the Story of Fatal 2?
“I’ve realized that the character has stayed with me all these years. I’m still performing as a singer and often incorporate Fatal Bazooka into my shows. Initially, my performances were for smaller crowds, but now I’m playing to festivals with up to 80,000 attendees. The character has continued to evolve even in my absence.”
“When I reconnected with Alain Goldman, the producer of the first film, we were eager to collaborate again on a fresh project. While brainstorming, he suggested, ‘What if we created a sequel to Fatal?’ I was hesitant at first, having heard that idea numerous times without any direction. But then he proposed, ‘What if we say he was in a coma and is just now waking up after 15 years?’ That sparked something exciting in me!”
“We found ourselves enchanted by this hilarious, absurd concept. It feels fantastic to return to genuine, hard-hitting comedy. I love what I call ‘dumb comedy,’ similar to the styles of Ben Stiller or Will Ferrell. There’s no sarcasm intended; I thoroughly enjoy this type of humor.”
Will Fatal Bazooka Adapt?
“Diving back into music and collaborating with friends to create tracks that are both ridiculous and entertaining is immensely satisfying. My intentions here are pure; I’m not looking to cash in on nostalgia. If we had done this just a few years after the first film, it might have seemed opportunistic. Now, we genuinely want to reconnect, share some laughs, and explore this character’s journey.”
“Surprisingly, he hasn’t evolved much. In today’s much more progressive climate, Fatal’s outdated views—his misogynistic and homophobic tendencies—won’t fly anymore. We’re set to have a lot of fun with that!”
The iconic character behind “Fous ta cagoule” remains unchanged, and he will need to navigate the complexities of 2024. Filming for Bazooka is set to start in 2025, with a likely release date in 2026. Meanwhile, Michaël Youn will be seen in C’est le monde à l’envers!, alongside Éric Elmosnino.
