An immense happiness. This is how the family of Louis-David Gauthier, the mischievous Charlie of The eye of the storm, depicts his experience behind the scenes of the family comedy. His difference, Down syndrome, the extroverted 24-year-old interpreter uses it above all as a tool of charm!
Louis-David Gauthier may have difficulty making himself understood, but he does not lack verve. While his parents explain their son’s routine and praise his talents, in a café in Montérégie, the main person happily interrupts them to provide information about himself, jokes included.
Speaking of his coach of play, the actress Geneviève Néron, met eight years ago at the Regroupement pour la trisomie 21 (thanks to which he is now a professional artist), Louis-David points to his nose while miming a circle with his finger, illustrating a “round nose”. ..
Louis-David obtained his first contract in 2016 – a dance performance at the Festival TransAmériques – then began to appear in shows We, Raspberry time And Like chicken heads.
At the filming of The eye of the storm, in which he has played the role of Charlie for four seasons, Louis-David is accompanied by his teacher and a parent, who remains aside while he works in his dressing room and shoots his segments. Geneviève Néron settles down near her protégé to support him.
When Louis-David asked directors Alain Chicoine and Julie Hogue about his performances, he was told a high five or a hug.
“Before filming began, they took the time to welcome him into a conference room, to introduce him to the actors he would be working with. They are warm, kind, caring, attentive and patient with him,” says Nancy, Louis-David’s mother, about the team. The eye of the storm.
His co-stars reciprocate his affection. Véronique Cloutier portrays Louis-David as a “formidable, endearing, very good actor, pleasant to be around, laughing” young man. Christine Beaulieu, who shares many scenes with him, adds in a burst of affection that “playing with Louis-David means relearning how to listen to your playing partner”.
“Louis-David naturally possesses what actors work for and seek for a long time to obtain: he has an open heart, without restraint, without barriers. He reveals himself humbly and completely. He seduces his audience and makes himself absolutely irresistible,” believes the interpreter of Isabelle, a single mother at the heart of the vignettes of The eye of the storm.
Without barriers
Our young interlocutor had been informed that a journalist was going to be interested in him. He takes the notion of an interview very seriously and tells us about his cinema and dance classes, his work in a thrift store, his passions for swimming, cycling, racketing, and playing the guitar. At the Gauthiers, we emphasize the positive. And, above all, no barriers are imposed on Louis-David.
“Since he was young, we tried to send him everywhere. It was opened to various activities. I didn’t want to put barriers on him, I told myself he would put some up himself. He is a complete person. We really want to respect his choices and what he likes. It’s a big victory for us that he doesn’t feel any different,” says his mother, Nancy.
