Los Guardiola performs “The Comedy of Tango” with brilliance, charm and elegance in Paris

Beauty and grace inhabit this anthology of tangos choreographed and directed by Giorgia Marchiori and Marcelo Guardiola, at the Théâtre Essaïon in Paris.

Tango tells stories. Los Guardiola has selected seven which they sublimate on stage in dramatic, inventive and renewed choreographies in each scene. The irresistible couple that form Giorgia Marchiori and Marcelo Guardiola swings at the Théâtre Essaïon in Paris every Thursday evening.

Boat

This is the seventh season of Los Guardiola in Paris, after a world tour during which Giorgia Marchiori and Marcelo Guardiola turned the heads of spectators with their skits inspired by tangos from the 1920s. Seven scenes in fourteen costumes, as many stories choreographed by Giorgia and directed by Marcelo, all varied, melodramatic, sensual and tinged with humor.

The Emigrant, The Boyfriend, Treachery…by Vincente Cuitino, by Carlo Lenzi, by Ivan Diez: the titles speak for themselves. The suavity of tango rushes into orchestrations where different sounds intertwine during a single scene, and from scene to scene. From this reorchestration a new choreography is born. Humor follows emotion, to the rhythm of swaying arches, while legs whirl and bodies tip over on a note. Giorgia Marchiori and Marcelo Guardiola are diabolically precise and fluid.

Modernity

The musical dramaturgy punctuates suave and romantic scenes, served by a staging that shines with its costumes and lights. The choreographic invention overlaps with that of mixing, where historical Argentinian recordings intersect with a bolero, where the couple finds themselves on a tiny cube 20 centimeters above the ground, then as Pierrot and Columbine in a marvelous pantomime, which brings to mind the whole show.

This reminder of a rare art on stage today demonstrates its modernity. Los Guardiola reinvents a mythology of Tango, embodying it in a flamboyant new stage dramaturgy.
