Measures were put in place at the beginning of September to ensure the safety of the mayor of Longueuil, Catherine Fournier, in accordance with the suggestion of the Longueuil Agglomeration Police Service (SPAL).
These measures are only preventive, explained Gino Iannone, SPAL communications and media relations inspector. Without being criminal in nature, some “disturbing” events that have occurred in recent months have pushed law enforcement to make this recommendation to Ms.me Fournier, he specifies.
The police officers who ensure the safety of the elected official are not deployed at her side at all times, adds Mr. Iannone. “It is surveillance that is sporadic and constantly evolving depending on the threat, therefore depending on the events the mayor attends, as well as depending on the elements that the police department may have. »
Two weeks ago, the mayor was also the subject of death threats. The inspector, however, said he could not provide further details on this subject, given that the investigation is ongoing. There have been no arrests yet in this case.
