Longueuil | 13 shots to kill a deer

The Longueuil agglomeration police department (SPAL) explained on Tuesday a recent case of the killing of a deer that required 13 shots spread over 30 minutes on February 19.

The SPAL had to respond that day to a call made to 911, around 11 a.m., to report the presence of an injured deer on land on rue des Buses, near Michel-Chartrand Park.

The animal injured in both front legs and therefore immobile had been there since around 7 a.m., SPAL spokesman Jean-Pierre Voutsinos said on Tuesday.

After receiving authorization from an agent of the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs, the agent wanted to proceed with the slaughter of the animal.

911 had been notified that shots were going to be fired in the area. As the procedure provides for in such cases, the officer took turns targeting the animal’s neck and thorax.

However, the animal survived longer than expected. No less than 13 shots spread over a period of 30 minutes were fired in his direction before he passed away, an incident that quickly alerted the neighborhood. The SPAL has also received several calls from concerned citizens, confirmed agent Voutsinos on Tuesday.

“The police officers before doing so obviously, made sure that there was no one close to the scene to be able to carry out a shooting which is without consequence for the safety of someone else. The animal was in the snow and remained on the ground at all times, so there was no risk of a ricochet,” he added.
