(Calgary) The Canadians earned three medals in the mass start events at the World Cup long track speed skating event in Calgary on Sunday.
Irene Schouten of the Netherlands won the women’s mass start at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval. She edged out Canadian Ivanie Blondin, who won the silver medal. The two women had also taken these positions during the Beijing Olympics in February.
Dutchwoman Marijke Groenewoud climbed to the third step of the podium on Sunday, more than a second behind Schouten.
Quebecer Valérie Maltais recorded an 11e square.
It was a third medal in as many days for Blondin, who took bronze in the 5,000 meters and added a silver medal in the women’s team sprint.
In the men’s mass start event, Canadians Connor Howe and Hayden Mayeur respectively took second and third place behind Belgium’s Bart Swings, who triumphed.
In the men’s 1,000 metres, American Jordan Stolz clocked 1:06.72 to claim the gold medal. Dutchman Thomas Krol (1:07.16) and Italian David Bosa (1:07.24) completed the podium.
Howe was the top-ranked Canadian with his fifth-place finish. Quebecers Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu, ninth, and Laurent Dubreuil, 11ealso participated in this final.
On the women’s side, Jutta Leerdam of the Netherlands won the event with a time of 1:12.53. She beat Japan’s Miho Takagi (1:13.19) and American Kimi Goetz (1:13.58).
Blondin signed a sixth place.
Canada won 10 medals during this World Cup, including two gold. The Netherlands dominated with 22 medals in total, including nine gold.
