(Quebec) Sherbrooke resident Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu won the gold medal in the 1,500 meters and set a track record at the Quebec Ice Center on Saturday at the Four Continents Long Track Speed Skating Championships.
Gélinas-Beaulieu clocked one minute 44.666 seconds, lowering the best performance on the Quebec track, which since October 15 belonged to Canadian Connor Howe (1:44.77).
Gélinas-Beaulieu’s medal is one of four won by Canada on the second of three days of this competition. In the same event, Canadian Jake Weidemann placed third in 1:47.405.
Kazakh Dmitry Morozov slipped between the two, thanks to a time of 1:46.305.
The Canadian delegation obtained a second gold medal on Saturday, that of Valérie Maltais in the women’s mass start event. Maltais clocked 9:14.700 and edged China’s Binyu Yang (9:15.300) and South Korea’s Ji-Woo Park (9:15.440).
In the women’s 1,500 metres, Canadian Alison Desmarais earned the bronze medal with a time of 1:58.260. She finished behind two Kazakhs, Nadezhda Morozova (1:56.378) and Yekaterina Aydova (1:57.528).
In the final event of the day, Jordan Belchos (8:16.790) was the top Canadian with a fourth-place finish in the men’s mass start.
