Long absence for Erik Karlsson

San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a minor tear in his left forearm and will miss several weeks of play, his team said.

The latter specified that the duration of the convalescence is indefinite, but the case of the Swedish veteran will be reassessed in mid-March.

Karlsson hasn’t played since Jan. 20 and his absence from Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning raised further suspicion about his physical condition. Already, injuries have plagued him this season, as he had missed a few games with an upper body problem recently.

The former Ottawa Senators has eight goals and 18 assists for 26 points in 33 games since the start of the campaign. The Sharks are fifth in the Pacific Division.
