London | Black Dog pub becomes a place of pilgrimage for Taylor Swift fans

(Londres) Ce tranquille pub londonien n’aurait jamais imaginé devenir un repaire des fans de Taylor Swift. Mais depuis la sortie du dernier album de la mégastar américaine, les « Swifties » affluent au « Black Dog », qu’ils pensent être le bar de la chanson du même nom.

Malgré la pluie, Dewmi Fernando, touriste de 23 ans venue de Singapour, prend la pose devant la devanture en briques surmontée d’un chien noir, à côté de l’ardoise où les gérants de ce pub du quartier de Vauxhall, au sud de la Tamise, ont écrit à la craie les paroles de Black Dog.

Dans ce titre, le 17^e du double album The Tortured Poets Department et The Anthology, la chanteuse aux 14 Grammy Awards raconte qu’elle a encore accès à la localisation de son ex sur son téléphone : « Tu as oublié de la désactiver/Et donc je te regarde entrer dans un bar appelé “The Black Dog”/Et percer de nouveaux trous dans mon cœur ».

Les « Swifties », qui adorent décrypter les messages cachés dans les paroles de la chanteuse, se sont mis en quête de ce fameux « Black Dog »… et sont arrivés à la conclusion qu’il s’agissait du pub de Vauxhall, après avoir découvert que l’ex-compagnon de Taylor Swift, l’acteur britannique Joe Alwyn, habiterait à proximité.

Rien ne garantit que ce pub soit celui dont parle la mégastar, qui a créé un véritable sentiment d’intimité avec son public grâce aux réseaux sociaux. Mais la nouvelle s’est disséminée sur TikTok et les fans affluent depuis au « Black Dog » sans discontinuer.

« Ça a été un tourbillon », reconnaît auprès de l’AFP Lily Bottomley, responsable événementielle du groupe SC Soho auquel appartient le pub.

De passage à Londres, Dewmi Fernando a immédiatement ajouté la visite du pub à son programme : « J’écoute Taylor Swift depuis que j’ai huit ans […] She was part of my childhood, my adolescence, and now my adult life, it’s as if I grew up with her.”

“The day the album came out was like Christmas morning for us. We are very big fans, and wherever there is a reference to Taylor, we will look for it,” assures AFP Charlotte Garratt, 23, who lives in Bedfordshire and came to spend the day in London with a friend.

“We feel like detectives looking for what the lyrics mean, if there are hidden double meanings or metaphors,” she adds.

Even if the pub is not yet full in the middle of the afternoon, all the tables are reserved for the evening, and fans regularly stop in front of the front to take photos of the slate.

This sudden enthusiasm is something to rejoice the establishment, at a time when the emblematic British pubs are going through a difficult period. Over the past two years, they have seen their costs explode due to galloping inflation, and are struggling to attract customers who are themselves affected by the purchasing power crisis.

The “Black Dog” therefore decided to make the most of it, by adding “Taylor’s Version” burgers and cocktails to its slate. For the album’s release last Friday, he offered beers to all fans capable of singing a Taylor Swift song, before stopping in the face of the influx of “Swifties”.

“The last four days have been really busy […] We are going to extend our opening hours to accommodate all these customers, and there is a real “Taylor Swift” effect on sales,” smiles Lily Bottomley, who however says she has “never seen” the singer in the bar.

Bookings have “increased significantly” for a “rather rainy week in April”, and the bar is already sold out for all of the star’s London concert dates this summer.

However, some accused the pub of going too far, after its manager told Sky News that he had looked at CCTV footage to see if Joe Alwyn or the pop star himself had gone to the “Black Dog” in recent months.
