(Brampton) Grocer Loblaw is backtracking on its decision to reduce its discounts on grocery products whose expiration dates are approaching.
Canada’s largest food retailer, with banners like Maxi and Provigo, sparked public anger this week when it decided that items on sale the day before the expiration date would henceforth be reduced by 30%. instead of “30 to 50%”.
This decision even prompted federal NDP MP Alistair MacGregor to call for an investigation into possible anti-competitive practices by the company.
Loblaw spokeswoman Catherine Thomas confirmed Friday afternoon that after hearing feedback from customers and employees, the company decided to return to its previous price-cutting practices on the “last day sales”.
Mme Thomas said in an email that customers can expect to see the return of “50% off” stickers in the coming weeks.
The country’s major supermarket chains are under public and government scrutiny as Canadians continue to face rising food prices.
