Liverpool start at a trot. Confirmed candidates for the title, the Reds conceded a draw on the lawn of Fulham (2-2), Saturday August 6, for the first day of the Premier League. Jürgen Klopp’s players are actually doing quite well after being twice led by the Cottagers (with a double from Mitrovic), promoted to the top flight. Mohamed Salah saved appearances in the final minutes, while rookie Darwin Nunez scored his first league goal earlier with a subtle backheel.

Chelsea did not fail Everton (0-1). In a heated match, the Blues generally dominated their subject. Their salvation came from a penalty converted by Jorginho at the end of the first period. Tottenham fared much better by signing a card against Southampton (4-1). Leeds (2-1 v Wolverhampton), Newcastle (2-0 v Nottingham) and promoted Bournemouth (2-0 v Aston Villa) also made successful home debuts.

In the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund won their first clash of the season against Leverkusen (1-0). Put into orbit by an early goal from Marco Reus, BVB then held on against repeated attacks from Bayer. Despite an excellent Moussa Diaby and a disallowed goal from Exequiel Palacios, the visitors left empty-handed.

In other matches, Union Berlin won the capital derby against Hertha (3-1). Mönchengladbach won by the same score against Hoffenheim, with goals from Marcus Thuram and Ramy Bensebaini, former Ligue 1 players. Finally, Werder Bremen, back in the top flight, got a good draw at Wolfsburg (2- 2).
