In better shape for a few matches in the league, Liverpool offered a demonstration against their arch rival, Manchester United (7-0), Sunday March 5. With doubles from Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, the Reds thus sign their biggest victory against the Mancunians in their history, confirming their return to the race for the Champions League.

Manchester United had however started the game well, with a first period of good quality, but was trapped on a goal from Cody Gakpo, just before the break (43rd). Awakened by this opener, the Reds then made short work of the Mancunians with perfectly executed counterattacks. Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo widened the gap in quick succession (47th and 50th), enough to knock out the Mancunians.

After a new goal from Mohamed Salah (66th), the Uruguayan offered himself a double (75th), then the Egyptian became the club’s top scorer in the history of the Premier League, with a 129th goal (83rd) . Came into play a few minutes earlier, Roberto Firmino closed the humiliation, on a pass from Salah (88th).

Champions League goal

With this triumph, a fifth consecutive game without conceding a goal in the league, Liverpool takes 5th place in Newcastle with one more unit (42 points against 41), and returns to three lengths from Tottenham, 4th and last virtual qualifier for the C1 . United, which had not lost 7-0 since 1931, remains firmly in 3rd place with 49 points.

The Reds now know the recipe to hope to catch up with their three-goal deficit over Real Madrid in the Champions League, in 10 days, after their defeat (2-5) in the first leg.
