In 2022, France has 12 million daily smokers according to the annual study by Public Health France published on May 31, 2023. After several years of decline, this figure is no longer falling. However, tobacco is the first preventable cause of death in France, with 75,000 deaths attributable to the substance in 2015, or 13% of deaths in France. So why do the French still smoke so much?

Social inequalities and smoking
The Public Health France study also highlights social inequalities that are still very marked in terms of smoking. There are more smokers among people without a diploma. 16.8% of people with higher education smoke against 30.8% for those who quit after the baccalaureate.
The proportions of smokers are also higher among people who are unemployed or among young people in apprenticeship as opposed to those who are educated in high school. How can these inequalities be explained?
