(OTTAWA) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will travel to Europe next week for the annual North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) leaders’ summit.
The two-day summit in Lithuania will begin on July 11 and comes as the alliance agreed to extend General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg’s term by a year.
NATO also recently expanded its membership to include Finland. Canada and other countries are pushing to allow Sweden to join as well.
Before the summit, Mr. Trudeau will stop in Latvia, where he will meet the president and the prime minister in Riga on July 10.
Canada leads an 11-nation NATO battlegroup in Latvia, its largest mission overseas.
Defense Minister Anita Anand recently pledged to add a tank squadron and about 130 soldiers as part of an effort to turn this battle group into a combat-ready brigade.
