A slight nod, a half-smile, and that’s it. On the red carpet, Lionel Messi flees the cameras and the microphones. A few hours after resuming training with Paris Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi donned the tuxedo on the evening of Monday May 8 to receive the prize for world sportsman of the year at the Laureus Awards which reward the best athletes of all country and all sports. The world champion’s Saudi escapade and his punishment by PSG were on everyone’s mind.
But to have a statement from Lionel Messi, you have to wait for the award ceremony and a speech that you are necessarily tempted to interpret. “This year, I had the chance to fulfill my biggest dream: to be world champion with my selection. It has asked me a lot throughout my career because despite all the joys with Barcelona, there have been many of sadness with the selection because I had not achieved the objectives set”said the Argentinian in particular.
Support from former PSG
Lionel Messi talks about the selection and Barcelona but not a word for his club for two seasons, Paris Saint-Germain. And when he goes back on stage for a second prize, that of the team of the year with his teammates from the Argentina team: “Everyone likes to win and wants to win but I think respect is the most important thing”says the Parisian striker.
A respect that Messi deserves, according to former PSG captain Brazilian Raï: “With all his history, his behavior throughout his life and what he represents for football, I believe he is someone who deserves a lot of respect.” Same support from a former Parisian glory, David Ginola: “If Paris Saint-Germain won, we wouldn’t have this kind of discussion, explains the former PSG striker. Unfortunately, it is not the case. But it’s not Leo Messi’s fault.”
During this evening Lionel Messi was seen deep in conversation with Robert Lewandowskithe FC Barcelona striker where a return of the Argentinian is still hoped for.
