Linguist Jean-Claude Corbeil passes away

(Montreal) The linguist Jean-Claude Corbeil died at the age of 89, announced Tuesday evening the Editions Quebec America.

Born in Montreal, Jean-Claude Corbeil played a major role in the implementation of Quebec’s language policy.

He was the head of the linguistic department of the Office de la langue française from 1971 to 1977, participated in the development of the Act respecting the official language of Quebec in 1974 as well as in the drafting of the Charter of the French language in 1977.

Jean-Claude Corbeil also directed and designed, alongside linguist Ariane Archambault, the first edition of the Visual Dictionary in 1986, distributed in more than 100 countries and translated into more than 35 languages.
