To protect their residents from Covid-19, some nursing homes choose to isolate them. Others allow visits, but respecting barrier gestures.

Protecting the elderly, without locking them up: this is the difficult equation to solve for many nursing homes, as the Christmas holidays approach and the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is spreading around the world. In one of its establishments, located in Tourcoing (North), visits are still authorized, which delights the residents. But the director remains vigilant. “Think about the barrier gestures, if you can, try to be tested: it is really protective measures but we have to learn to live unfortunately with this virus”, says Dorothée Poignant.

Some establishments choose to isolate their residents in their rooms, even if the national protocol does not require it. Tuesday, December 21, only positive cases, non-vaccinated contact cases and contact cases of people affected by Omicron must be isolated. In an Ehpad in Center-Val-de-Loire, after the discovery of a positive case in a unit, residents were reportedly locked up on December 3. After 17 days of isolation and facing the scolding of families, the establishment has finally relaxed the rules.
