The race for the European Cup is on. Lille will face Lugano (Switzerland) or Fenerbahçe (Turkey) in the third preliminary round of qualifying for the Champions League, before possible play-offs, revealed the draw made on Monday 22 July in Nyon (Switzerland) at the UEFA headquarters. Losc, who finished 4th in the last season of Ligue 1, have already beaten Fenerbahçe in the round of 16 of the 2009-2010 Europa League (2-1, 1-1), but have never met Lugano.
The winner of the clash between the Istanbul club and the Swiss club will challenge Lille on August 6 or 7 (first leg) at the Hainaut stadium in Valenciennes, in a match moved due to the Olympic Games, and on August 13 (second leg). If the northern club manages to qualify for the next round, it will play in the play-offs, the first legs of which will be played on August 20 and 21 and the second legs on August 27 and 28. The draw for this round is scheduled for August 5. Once the last qualifiers are known at the end of these play-offs, the draw for the new Champions League format will be held on August 29.
