As an extension of Ligue 1, the French Ligue 2 championship will be played with 18 clubs from the 2024-2025 season, instead of 20 currently. Adopted at 78.34% by the General Assembly on Thursday, December 9, 2021, the reform was formalized through a press release from the LFP.
The President of the Professional Football League (LFP), Vincent Labrune, explains having chosen “to continue the virtuous and ambitious dynamic for French professional football.” The format change will be made by four descents and two climbs between Ligue 2 and National at the end of the 2023-2024 season.
According to Labrune, these changes in Ligue 1, and one later in Ligue 2, “demonstrate the union and the will of all the clubs to create the conditions for an ambitious reform plan which will involve the creation of a commercial company. This decision to move from Ligue 2 to 18 will allow us to work with the FFF on the creation of a third professional division. With Ligue 2 and the National, we must promote the football of the territories “, welcomed the president of the LFP.
