In an interview with our colleagues from the team, the president of the Girondins de Bordeaux expressed his fears, this Sunday, for the maintenance after the defeat at home against Estac (0-2). Gérard Lopez does not speak every week but the owner of the Marine et Blanc is alarmed when there is only 12 days and that his club is last in Ligue 1. “You have to be aware and respect the supporters for whom I have admiration. They come to the stadium to push the team“, regrets the businessman.
“The problem is that we are afraid”
Like the Ultras who whistled the players at the end of the game, the president of the Girondins de Bordeaux regrets the attitude of his players. “The problem is that we are afraid and that we find ourselves in a situation of trying to qualify for the play-offs. It’s hard to accept“, admits Gerard Lopez.
This situation seems more and more likely given the recurring difficulties of the Navy and White, mired in last place in the standings for four games. Victories can be counted on the fingers of one hand this season (four out of 27 games played) and the former owner of Losc is aware that the situation is becoming urgent: “It goes through a click as a team. It requires commitment, 120% concentration and respect for the game plan. […] Players do not follow the game plan.“
The players do not respect the game plan – Gérard Lopez, president of the Girondins de Bordeaux
He assures that he will stay if the club goes down to Ligue 2
Bordeaux cannot manage to get out of this negative spiral and remains stuck in the red zone for a month, despite the change of coach. “We are not asking for the impossible. Normally, when you have quality, when you add character, concentration and respect for work, there should be no problems”, adds Gerard Lopez.
Sure. I have a personal and emotional investment – Gérard Lopez
The threat of Ligue 2 has been hanging over the club for several months. At a press conference in early January, the general manager of the Girondins, Thomas Jacquemier, announced: “Today, for the Girondins, there is no life in Ligue 2. The income from TV rights in Ligue 2 does not allow the club to survive there.“. What Gérard Lopez adds this Sunday, that a “super deep overhaul of the structure“of the club will be needed. Will he be at the club if he were to go down?”Sure. I have a personal and emotional investment“, replies Gérard Lopez laconically.
