LGBTphobic school violence and harassment have increased considerably in Europe, and particularly in France. This is the alarming finding revealed by a new report from the European Union’s fundamental rights agency.
He thought he was going on a romantic date in June 2023, but when he got there, he fell into a trap and was attacked by four men. “I was at a party, there were people. I met a person whom I followed, who took me to a dark and isolated place. Other people were waiting for me and tapped me face calling me a dirty faggot”he remembers.
Homophobic ambushes are increasing, according to the European Union’s fundamental rights agency: +16% last year in France, the third country in the European Union where homophobic violence is most felt in the streets, but also at school. In 2023, seven out of ten people say they have already been victims of homophobic harassment at school. They were four out of ten in 2019. Within the European Union, 14% of LGBTQI+ people say they have suffered physical and sexual violence, compared to 11% five years ago.
