Leylah Annie Fernandez lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to Australia’s Maddison Inglis in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old Lavaloise participated in her first grand slam tournament since the United States Open where she lowered her flag in the final. She also dropped out in the first round last year in her first senior appearance at the Australian Open.
The 23rd racket in the world was surprised by Inglis, from qualifying, and admitted defeat in one hour 23 minutes of play.
Fernandez struggled throughout the game with 30 unforced errors and six double faults.
Inglis, seeded 139, will face American Hailey Baptiste in the second round. Baptiste is also from qualifying.
