Leylah Fernandez eliminated at Indian Wells tournament

Quebecer Leylah Fernandez lost in three sets of 7-5, 5-7 and 6-2 in the second round of the Indian Wells tournament on Saturday to Frenchwoman Diane Parry.

Fernandez (34e) took a one-break lead in the second game of the third set, but then lost six consecutive games.

The Laval resident only put 55% of her first service balls into play in the third, winning only 32% of the rallies when she had the balls in hand.

In total, Fernandez was broken seven times in 12 occasions by Parry (61e) during this duel which lasted 2 hours 58 minutes.

Canadian Milos Raonic withdrew from the tournament due to injury.

Raonic (224e) was to face the Dane Holger Rune (7e) in the second round. The seventh seed thus reached the third round by forfeit.

Raonic started the Masters 1000 with a victory in two identical sets of 6-3 against the Indian Sumit Nagal on Thursday. He was initially scheduled to face Rafael Nadal, but the latter withdrew on Wednesday.

Ontarian Denis Shapovalov (131e) has a meeting with the Italian Lorenzo Musetti (26e) at the end of the afternoon.

Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime (31e), already in the third round, will cross swords with the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (second) on Sunday.
