Quebecer Leylah Annie Fernandez lost 6-4 and 7-6 (5) to Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the third round of the French Open tennis tournament on Friday.
Eighth seed, Jabeur won in just under two hours against Fernandez, 21e first in the series.
Each made 27 unforced errors, but Jabeur had the advantage 3-2 in breaks and 26-24 in winning shots.
Jabeur’s next rival will be Clara Tauson, who defeated Sofia Kenin, 6-2 and 7-5.
Fernandez was broken twice in the first set. The second break was scored at zero and gave Jabeur a 5-4 lead.
The Canadian let a 3-1 cushion slip away in the second set.
She was broken again, then her rival created an impasse by not giving any points on serve.
When the deadlock was broken, the 21-year-old Quebecer found herself in a 0-2 deficit, before scoring three consecutive points. She ended the third point with a parallel passing, then sealed the next point after placing two balls very deep.
Jabeur sent a shot into the net, then the score was 5-5. Fernandez then lodged a return too far, then Jabeur ended the debate with a ball from the back of the field.
Canadians Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov started their matches on Friday, but rain interrupted them. They will have to wait until Saturday to return to action.
Auger-Aliassime, 21e seeded, led 5-4 in the first set against American Ben Shelton, 15e Headlining.
Shapovalov trailed 6-3, 7-6 (0), 2-1 to No. 8 seed Hubert Hurkacz. Trailing 4-3 in the first set, Shapovalov failed to break and hit his head twice with his racket.
On Saturday, Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga will meet Jasmine Paolini of Italy, 12.e first in the series.
